Sun Valley

Sun Valley is to the North American ski scene as Hollywood is to the entertainment industry. In fact, many of the Hollywood glitterati have vacationed in this Idaho resort town since its modern inception as a recreational wonderland in 1935. One famed literary icon liked the skiing and year-round recreational lifestyle so much that he made Ketchum his permanent home, after a lifetime of wanderlust. His name was Ernest Hemingway.

While the so called "beautiful people" may have put Sun Valley on the map, it's the real people who live in town who make it a special place to visit. From renowned lift-served skiing on Dollar and Baldy Mountains to backcountry heli-skiing trips, Sun Valley serves up a temptatious winter smorgasbord of activities for young and old alike.

In summer, more than one million acres of spectacular wilderness await avid fly fishing, mountain biking, climbing, paddling, equestrian, kayaking, whitewater rafting, golfing, and paragliding enthusiasts. There are scores of qualified, seasoned guides and outfitters to take you safely into the unknown and back; or, for some visitors, the cultural side of town, with summer theatre and musical performances amidst an alpine backdrop are all that's needed for a well deserved dose of rest and relaxation. There's even a "Wellness Festival" each May, to educate and inspire those seeking active, healthy lifestyles.

As you might imagine, with over 6,000 beds, lodging runs the gamut from the simple to the luxurious, with price points to suit every budget. And of course, camping, even winter camping in heated yurts is always an option. In the Ketchum area, more than 80 dining establishments await, from family style to the elegant Duchin Room--a member of Chaine des Rotisseurs, the oldest gourmet society in the world, founded in 1248.

Many visitors elect to fly into Boise, Idaho and either rent a vehicle or take a shuttle for the 150 mile drive to Sun Valley. Charter and private aircraft can fly into the Friedman Memorial Airport in Hailey,12 miles from the ski area.
