Ski Crested Butte

Skiing in Crested Butte is arguably the greatest Ski Sleeper of all time; This fantastic resort destination, located on the Western Slopes, in the middle of Colorado, it somehow manages to be overlooked by most of the reviews. Perhaps that's because they fly in to Denver and never get that far, but you can fly in to Gunnison, and it's a short drive north from there to some awesome Colorado skiing. If you're driving in from the south, all the better! Alamosa to Gunnison, to heaven!

Crested Butte really is a ski resort for everyone! Kids get special attention at Crested Butte. There's even a Kids' Trail Map! So while it's definitely a family-oriented place, there's still Teocalli Bowl, which is all double Black-Diamond runs, for the expert skier and adrenalin junkie. You'll be thrilled to find that this mountain is fully developed – more complete usage, more runs on it, than most anywhere else mountain snow can be found! As always, Colorado's Rocky Mountains boasts a ski patrol and instructors which are second to none, so you're assured of a safe trip and many opportunities to improve your skills and abilities. Crested Butte is an ideal mountain for such progress, since it offers so many trails, so many runs for skiers and snowboarders of different abilities! Featuring the DC Superpipe (400 feet long, 17 feet deep,) DC Terrain Park, Keystone Jib Park, Painter Boy Terrain Park, and Park Pods, even boarders and aerial enthusiasts will find several degrees of ease and difficulty to hone their skills – or hot dog!

Though it's in the southern half of Colorado, Crested Butte is just 17 miles (and a rather tall mountain range) from Aspen, Colorado, so dress accordingly. Wear several light layers and a waterproof, breathable outer shell. Be prepared for temperatures to be SIGNIFICANTLY colder at the top of the mountain and after a “dump” of snow, once the cloud cover lifts. The wind chill alone can drop temperatures several degrees, and the lowest chair starts at 9100 feet. This makes for awesome snow which allows the resort to be open from Mid-November through the first week in April!

While Crested Butte IS a family place, it's also well known for the nightlife and especially for the Xtreme Events that are hosted there every year. The ample terrain park and rather impressive verticals lend themselves well to pushing the envelope to the limits and beyond. Be sure that you're working within your abilities. Advancement is fine, but honesty is the watchword – both with your ski tech and with yourself. Play at the level of difficulty you feel safe with. That way you'll have a great time and the opportunity to improve your skills and abilities throughout your vacation! Crested Butte is an awesome place to ski or snowboard, and a really great choice for your next ski vacation!
